Say No to Dieting

in Weight Loss

Why does our body store fat? You should first understand why the human body stores excess calories as
body fat. Most people do not understand this, and that is one of the reasons why most people are unsuccessful at getting rid of excess body fat, and lose weight.

The body stores excess blood sugar (energy in the blood stream) in fat cells (or adipose tissue). Think of these fat cells as water balloons. Once these fat cells fill up they then begin to overflow. If that happens, the body will build a new fat cell to store the overflow. The problem is once your body adds these new fat cells; you cannot get rid of them! You can empty them, but they are still there.

Body fat is the last thing your body wants to use for energy, especially if your blood sugar levels are constantly changing. The whole reason we store fat is to have a reserve for when the other fuel sources are not available!

What are the other fuel sources?
1. Blood Sugar
2. Muscle Tissue or Glycogen (muscle energy)
3. Body Fat

Blood sugar, which can be a combination of carbohydrates, proteins, and dietary fats (not body fat), is the first fuel source that our body uses. After this it will do one of two things-it either breaks down any unnecessary (unused) muscle tissue or it will tap into stored glycogen (muscle energy). What determines this usage is your level of activity.

During periods of light to moderate activity, the body will break down the muscle tissue. If the level of activity is high (hard physical work), then the body will use glycogen. Then, if the body has utilized all of the above, it might mobilize body fat stores. However, it depends on whether or not the body still needs fuel (you probably have eaten again by this point). This scenario also tells the body that there is a problem and it automatically slows down the metabolism to conserve fuel by burning less fuel. If you work very hard, and do not eat anything, your body tends to shut down the high-energy resources from burning down to use it in emergency-this high energy source is body fat that gives around 9 kcal per gram. Therefore, more work and no eating leads to usage of muscle tissue instead and you start losing your muscle bulk most of the times than your body fat. This harms your body in the end, and you tend to put on even more weight when you start eating again. Therefore, YOU SHOULD NOT DIET TO LOSE WEIGHT! Instead eat frequent small meals to signal the body to use body fat instead of muscle tissue to produce energy, and hasten up the metabolism. However, heavy meals should be avoided at all costs as they will add up to the existing body fat.

The major problem for most of the people is, they think that if they do not eat breakfast, and do exercise in addition to not eating the breakfast, they will have to burn fat. Sorry, but that is not the case. In fact by skipping meals your body gets a wrong message of being starved, and it tries to raise your blood glucose levels by utilizing other energy sources described above (but not fat). This might seem a bit complicated but it is best if you really understand how the body uses energy. Therefore, rather than skipping meals, you should consume mini-meals at frequent intervals to give your body a message that it does not need to store fat, but burn it.  If you are fond of eating sweets or things containing sugar, try adding sugar alternatives instead, such as aspartame or luo han guo etc. Say “No” to dieting!
