spoonful%20of%20cereal Common food additivesWe have already listed the harmful food additives and those which are potentially not safe. Let us discuss about the commonly used food additives today. The list is quit long, so, we will be posting them in parts. Why we are discussing them in detail is because they do play a vital role in today’s food supply. Consumer concerns over food additives often stem from misinformation or confusion over long chemical names. All new additives receive federal government approval; older additives which are still being used, are presumed to be generally safe.

First, let us divide them in categories for a general ideas of their classes into which they are usually divided by various food processing companies or even in records. They are:

1. Preservatives

2. Antioxidants

3. Coloring

4. Flavor Enhancers

5. Emulsifiers,Stabilizers, and Thickeners

In the next post, we will be discussing about each of them in detail that is required for general information for them and getting a fair idea of their uses and functions.
